Anna-Lisa McSweeney from White Arkitekter will speak about the practice’s proposed design for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, which aims to be the UK’s “most sustainable hospital” when completed. Turning to commercial buildings, Alexia Laird will present Landsec’s Timber Square in Southwark, central London; a 14-storey partial retrofit and vertical extension that looks set to create a new precedent for urban commercial development in the UK. Kelly Harrison from Whitby Wood will show us how we can build on top of our cities with timber, retrofitting existing buildings and vertically extending them, creating additional floor space and storing carbon on top of our existing built environment.
Finally, Andy Tugby from Human Nature will talk about the developer’s plans for the Phoenix industrial estate in Lewes, where they have employed a phalanx of the UK’s most renowned architects to transform this brownfield site into the country’s largest timber residential development, a car-free mixed-use utopia set against the backdrop of the South Downs National Park.

Armed with some elementary knowledge of manufacturing processes and good intelligence of the local supply chain it’s possible to deliver low impact steel framed buildings today that can meet demanding embodied carbon targets.
But the key to a carbon neutral steel industry is in decarbonizing primary steelmaking which accounts for approximately 70% of global manufacture.
In the last 12 months ArcelorMittal has taken significant steps to meet its target of a global carbon emissions intensity reduction of 25% by 2030 and 35% in Europe.
Over €10 billion of investment is required to achieve that interim goal and transform the way that we make primary steel, and over half has already been committed to projects. A first of its kind CCU plant has been inaugurated in Europe, ground has been broken on a transformative new hydrogen ready steel plant, strategic acquisitions have been made and partnerships have been formed with the industrial players that can provide the renewable power infrastructure to enable the transition to low carbon steelmaking. But, importantly, it’s also possible to improve the carbon offer of secondary steelmaking too.
How do developers and designers choose partners that are really engaged with and can deliver on the Paris agreement, and move the steel industry and the construction sector forward together toward that common goal?

The state of Arkansas is 58% covered in forest and possesses a timber economy of demonstrable national value. It is also growing two trees for each one that is harvested. The University of Arkansas has steadily built a value-added timber and wood products approach to both its design education and campus architectural commissions, invigorating the “forest economy “ of the state and the “low-carbon” dimension of the design programs. Aided by a parallel commitment and investment from its regional neighbour, Walmart, the University of Arkansas is now a national leader in low-carbon design education and campus design and construction.
We’ll hear from the Arkansas team embracing low-carbon design education and timber construction technology and harnessing it within the built assets of the campus, saving the University of Arkansas money and delivering on the administration’s commitment to sustainable design. Through three successive projects, growing in value and complexity, the team will show how timber design and construction was adopted as their go-to architectural material. The 2023 AR Future Projects overall winner, the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation, designed by Grafton Architects for the Fay Jones School, is the prominent, emblematic example of the University’s commitment to the “forest to campus” initiative.

Numerous habitats are threatened by changes to both water quality and the depletion of surface and groundwater resources caused by development.
In the last few months there has been a spate of planning application refusals (mostly in Sussex and Cambridgeshire) led by the Environment Agency and Natural England. This is now leading to Natural England requesting ‘water neutrality’ as a minimum requirement for developers. Much like carbon neutrality, this uses a reduce, re-use and off-set hierarchy akin to the energy hierarchy.
We need to understand what we can do, as developers – as well as what is technically feasible. This issue will be amplified as our climate emergency deepens. Now is the time to come together as an industry to ensure this happens….in a way that meets our development needs.
This crucial breakfast briefing will be exploring:
- Incentives offered by water companies to developers, asking if they are equitable.
- How we can reduce demand through more water efficient fittings and new labelling.
- How we can reduce demand through greywater & rainwater re-use.

The project meets long-held community ambitions for the demolition of the Agora Centre, a failed 1970s leisure and shopping centre built in the 1970s, and reinstates the lost Victorian street pattern, reconnecting and revitalising Wolverton’s town centre.

Through adaptive re-use the design shows what can be possible within the constraints of an outdated 70’s concrete structure, and offers a template for the future-proofing of similar buildings.
