The Venue

Old Billingsgate

Old Billingsgate was chosen because it was the first building in the City of London to adopt environmental principles which are now becoming more common some 40 years later; the conversion from fish market was overseen by Marco Goldschmied of Richard Rogers Partnership (now RSHP) in 1985-88 with environmental engineering by Ove Arup. The practice strongly favoured the retention of historic buildings of quality and agreed to advise the conservation group SAVE on its campaign to preserve the redundant Billingsgate fish market, owned by the City (which proposed to demolish it for redevelopment). It now stands in front of the glass towers of more recent developments in the City.

For visitors to London who want to stay overnight, our recommended hotel partner is the social business GOOD HOTEL who use an immaculately re-purposed 146 room floating platform re-purposed in Holland and towed across the North Sea on a submersible barge. The hotel is moored in the Victoria dock just 20 minutes away from FOOTPRINT using the Docklands Light Railway. GOOD HOTEL will be speaking at our conference at a talk on Social Value Businesses. In close collaboration with Newham Workplace and the Borough Council of Newham, the UK version of the Good Training was set up. In 2017 the program started, training approximately 60 local residents per year out of unemployment. The success rate continues to be over 70%.
